Movie Haiku:Compared to Minnelli’s vibrant technicolor, Altman’s version of Vincent Van Gogh’s tortured life is altogether more downbeat, disjointed, & violent. Theo (Vincent’s art dealer brother) is a central character here, emphasizing the love/hate tension between creation & commerce. Gabriel Yared’s dissonant soundtrack carries the emotion, but is sometimes too intrusive.
