FF2 Note:
In prior years, we’ve had multiple matches in each category (where Category One indicates films that are on both “Top Ten” lists, Category Two indicates films that are on one “Top Ten” list & one “Near Miss” list, & Category Three indicates films that are on both “Near Miss” lists). This year we have only one Category One match
(ACROSS THE UNIVERSE), & no matches at all in Category Three, but the number of matches in Category Two is huge.
We think this means two things: first, we both agree that
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
is a fabulous film (most especially on all its technical dimensions), so we simply cannot understand why it was almost completely shut-out of this year’s Oscar ceremony; second, there were a lot of other really good films in 2007 that were also overlooked by both the Oscar & the Spirit Award folks.
In almost every case, we both enjoyed the “non-matches” on the other person’s list, although there were only a few much-debated “split decisions.” On Jan’s side, she believes Rich needs to take a second look at
THE SAVAGES. One Rich’s side, he believes Jan needs to take a second look at
I’M NOT THERE. Perhaps this will happen in the future, & one or both of us will upgrade our current ratings.
Meanwhile, film buffs will quickly notice that almost none of this year’s Oscar contenders appear anywhere on this list. For the record, we both thought
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
was extremely good & MICHAEL CLAYTON was a riveting pot-boiler, but we nixed
ATONEMENT & we loathed both
JUNO & THERE WILL BE
BLOOD. For more on all this, see REFLECTIONS ON OSCAR
2008.
Finally, we are extremely grateful to our talented friend
Sharon Rosenzweig for creating our hilarious new CyberStatuette. Thanks to Sharon, another one of Jan’s crazy visions has now become a reality!

Note for Supporters of the WITASWAN Initiative:
There are 11 WITASWAN
films on this year’s Twozies list – some of which were selected by Rich but not by Jan! Each one of these films was either directed &/or written by a woman. Almost all of them are already out on DVD. If not, then they will be soon, so PLEASE get busy building the buzz!
