After lobbying for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE in 2009 & THE HURT LOCKER in 2010, I just didn’t have the energy to fight for WINTER’S BONE last year (since I already knew it was lucky just to be nominated), but this year? Not just lack of progress, but visibly retrograde motion

But really, folks, really:
In a world filled with millions of people of every shape, size and color, in a world where approximately half the population is female, here they are: the five nominees for this year’s Best Director Oscar.
Michel Hazanavicius
Alexander Payne
Martine Scorsese
Woody Allen
Terrence Malick
Now of course these five guys are all very different from one another, with different backgrounds, experiences, and sensibilities, and yet… Which of you will argue that, whatever their differences, these guys have more in common with one another than with the 99% of film directors (of every background) who have never been nominated?
This year various journalists were on the case, providing numbers to back up my claims for years now. Bottom Line: No, it is NO coincidence that year after year, the vast majority of candidates always look just like these five!

Here is a complete list of the 2012 Oscar Candidates:
NOTE: This list does NOT include any of the Short film candidates
(Animated Short, Documentary Short, or Live Action Short).
Also eliminated from this list are most animated films, and docs
& foreign language films that have yet to open in Metro Chicago.

Congratulations to this year’s “winners.” The record books will all record your success for the ages, but aficionados will always know that most of you didn’t earn it. Candidates much more qualified than you were eliminated early, and you are really the beneficiaries of an unfair system begging for change!
